Mike Ball Dive Expeditions - 3 night Fly Dive Cod Hole

Duration: 3 Nights
Departs: Monday, check-in 7am and depart 8am
Returns: Thursday 8am, Cairns Trinity Wharf, complimentary transfers to inner city hotels.

Cairns to Lizard Island scenic flight. Dive the Ribbon Reefs including the Acropolis and Cod Hole.

Details: The 3 Night Fly/Dive Cod Hole expeditions begin with an incredible 250 kilometre low level reef flight. You glide over your dive sites along the outer Great Barrier Reef to Lizard Island. Soon you are swimming with diver size fish at the Cod Hole before exploring the exquisite Ribbon Reef sites north of Cooktown. Here you see the best concentrations of pristine corals, colourful tropical fish and fantastic Minke whale encounters (June/July). Includes the amazing Acropolis (the best coral reef site we have ever dived). Enjoy comfortable cruising within sheltered waters aboard Spoilsport where space, comfort and stability are unmatched.

  • Premium Cabin:  Double or Queen bed, private bathroom and ocean views.

  • Club Cabin:  Two single bunk beds, private bathroom (mid vessel, less motion)
  • Budget Cabin:  Two single bunk beds, shared bathroom facilities (front of vessel)

ITINERARY:

MONDAY: Ribbon Reef #10 & #9- Cod Hole, Cod Wall, Challenger Bay

  • Check-in and Departure - Monday by 7:00am . Check in luggage at Mike Ball Office - 2/3 Abbott St, Cairns. Transfer to Cairns Airport.
  • Spectacular low level (200m) 250km reef flight to Lizard Island to board Spoilsport.
  • Commence diving approximately at 12:30pm
  • Swim, play with, and photograph a family of giant potato cod at the Cod Hole.
  • Explore the nooks and crannies of pristine coral gardens at Challenger Bay.
  • Experience a diverse array of nocturnal marine species on the night dive at Challenger Bay.

TUESDAY: Ribbon Reefs #9, #5, #4 - Lighthouse Bommie, Pixie Pinnacle, Andy’s Postcard, Clam Beds, Vertical Gardens

  • Circumnavigate Pixie Pinnacle and Lighthouse Bommie shrouded in fusiliers and baitfish. Fluorescent purple and orange anthias attract predatory fish to these photogenic sites. Majestic Minke whales are seen here in June and July.
  • Rising from 80 meters the pinnacle of Andy’s Postcard is encrusted in hard corals, lion fish, nudibranchs, octopus, schooling trevally and barracuda.
  • See spectacular giant clams at Clam Beds as well as caves, canyons and coral encrusted bommies awaiting exploration.
  • Sheer walls covered in whip corals and sea fans brim the natural amphitheatre of Vertical Gardens. Marine life varies from the many colourful nudibranchs to large schooling bump head parrotfish.

WEDNESDAY: Ribbon Reef #3 - Flare Point, Joani’s Joy, Steve’s Bommie

  • Spiral majestic coral pinnacles teeming with marine life.
  • See huge schools of baitfish stalked by barracuda, mackerel and trevally.
  • Anticipate spectacular coral gardens, spotted rays, reef sharks and green turtle sightings.

THURSDAY: Dock at Trinity Wharf at 8am.

  • Breakfast on Supersport and board coach for a courtesy transfer to Cairns city hotels.

Depth Guidelines
Depth guidelines are based on the diver’s experience and industry standards. The maximum recommended depth for divers with appropriate experience is 40 metres (132ft). Dives in excess of 40 metres (132ft) to a maximum of 50 metres (165ft) can only be undertaken by divers with a minimum experience of 100 dives with 25 deeper than 30 metres (100ft) including one to a depth within 3 metres of dive being undertaken.

New (1 year old) BCD's and regulators are supplied to guests in Premium and Standard cabins who rent equipment.


PLEASE NOTE:

  • Flying After Diving - the surface interval between the last dive completed at 5pm and flying at 9.30am is 16.5 hours, which exceeds the DAN minimum requirement of 12 hours. An additional safety feature is that Skytrans fly's below 1000ft, weather permitting.
  • Depth guidelines are based on the diver’s experience and industry standards. The maximum recommended depth for divers with appropriate experience is 40 metres (132ft).   • Luggage: 25kg / 55lbs, max weight of any bag. On Fly/Dive itineraries: 25kg / 55lbs, allowance per person plus 3kg / 5.5lbs carry-on allowance, OR 10kg / 22lbs - for professional photo / video housed system. You can leave items in excess at Mike Ball office.
